Drone Forwards, Drone Left, Drone Up, Drone Land!
We were so inspired by our recent Supercody Coding and Drone Workshop that we thought we’d go and get our own drones and get to work programming!
We’ve just begun learning how to use our DJI Tello Edu drones and thought we might as well learn with the children on the go. It’s amazing how adept children are with technology! We’ve only had two sessions at the time of posting this, and have had very enthusiastic children keen on exploring more.
Banjo, Nate, Ayrton, Marius and others have discovered just how difficult it is to manually control an aircraft that can move in three dimensions- side to side, forwards and back, and up and down. It was a struggle to steer the drone left and right as the children realised that they were steering from their perspective, rather than the drone’s. Each of them persisted through the challenge and tried many times to safely land the craft on the Mission Pad.
In our next session we’ll continue to sharpen our manual control skills and explore other things that we can do with a drone including stunt flips! We’ll also record some bird’s eye view footage for you to see too!
The children will be able to learn or use their experience with block coding to write code and develop AI functions with either Scratch, Python, or Swift. More to follow!
