Coding and drones!

The children really enjoyed our SuperCody Air Combat Mission Workshop during the July school holidays! Lots of children have been curious about coding, drones and robotics, and so we were very pleased to have discovered SuperCody, who offer these things and more with a focus on both learning and fun.

SuperCody emphasise many broad learning outcomes from their workshops including 21st century skills, problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, imagination, curiosity, persistence, and reflexivity. Sounds quite like the My Time, Our Place learning outcomes!

The activities involved using an app to create code to direct a drone to achieve a certain task. Children had to work together to achieve goals and most had success and most experienced failure! Children were supportive of each other as it was challenging to learn and apply specific instructions to make the drone do the thing that they wanted it to do. It sounds easy, but was actually quite difficult!

It was amazing to see our older children engaged with and inspired by the presentation and activities and also encouraging that SuperCody was able to engage younger children too. The most enthusiastic children that we noted were James, Nixon 1, Nixon 2, Niamh, Kye, Bill, Augie, Connor F, Hayden, and Lucas S and they were very interested in having SuperCody visit us again!

We had conversations with the SuperCody team about current and future applications of drones and discovered the following:

  • Entertainment

  • Film and photography

  • Transport, shipping and deliveries

  • Search and rescue

  • Disaster and bushfire management

  • Farming and agriculture

  • Wildlife monitoring

  • Law enforcement

  • Weather and climate

  • Surveying and mapping
